For many people, the winter can cause discomfort to the face and the hands causing dry, cracked skin. For others, the skin can get so dry it results in flaky, rough inflammation to the face and hands resulting in eczema.
Here are 4 tips to help boost your winter skin care regimen and enjoy healthy moisturized skin in the colder months.
1. Moisturize More
Moisturizing your face during all seasons are great but as the weather changes, so should our moisturizer. For the winter, it’s best to use a thicker moisturizer for extra protection. Maybe it’s time to switch out that water-based moisturizer for something more oil-based. The oil adds an extra layer of protection to the skin and will retain more moisture than a cream or lotion does. Although this sounds simple, not all oils are good for the skin. Look for non-comedogenic (non-clogging) oils like grapeseed oil, rosehip seed oil, or primrose oil.
2. SPF, SPF, SPF!
Sunscreen is NOT only for the summertime. Winter air also has damaging effects on the elasticity of the skin. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to the hands and the face 30 minutes before leaving the house. Reapply as needed if you’re staying out a little longer.
3. Avoid Harsh Skin Care Routines
Harsh masks, peels, and alcohol-based astringents or toners will strip your face of natural oils. During the winter time its best to use foaming cleansers and milk cleansers to keep the skin hydrated, and lock in moisture. Also dump your clay masks and opt in for cream or gel – based masks.
4. Humidifiers may be a good idea!
When you combine the chill winter air with unforgiving heat, you cause major problems for the skin and have to put in a lot more work to retain moisture. Humidifiers trap moisture in the air which helps prevent the skin from drying out. You can also add a hydrating mist to give that extra hydration. Aloe is a great addition to a mist because it moisturizes and soothes the skin.
